At-Home Self-Care Remedies During Isolation

As the entire world grapples with the catastrophic COVID-19 pandemic, health authorities have been advising that self-isolation and social-distancing practices are crucial steps that can help to 'flatten the curve.' In simple words, it means that we need to stem the spread of the virus so that our medical facilities don't become overwhelmed by hoards of patients showing up all at once.

Why Focus on Self Care?

But after you have been self-isolating for weeks, you can start to feel a little stressed and out-of-sorts. This is the perfect time for some at-home self-care, which is an excellent way to keep stress and anxiety at bay. It can also help you stay healthy and fit at a time when everything around you seems to be in a state of turmoil.  Among other things, self-care can:

  • Reduce irritability
  • Reduce stress
  • Improve your mental wellbeing
  • Increase your energy
  • Reduce anxiety
  • Maintain positivity
  • Keep you more focused on things that matter

Some Self Care Remedies

Here are some self-care practices you can follow while you are in self-isolation

1. Practice excellent hygiene

Make sure that you wash your hands frequently during the day for at least 20-second per wash. Do the same before stepping out of the house and on your return. It’s best to avoid crowds and always carry a hand sanitizer with you when you are stepping out. Keep your home very clean and maintain personal hygiene too.

2. Eat Healthy Foods

Good nutrition is the backbone of a healthy immune system. While it can be tempting to reach for ready-to-eat or processed foods that you can just pop into the microwave, that's something you need to avoid at all costs. It's also crucial to avoid snacking on chips and crisps or consuming excessive fizzy drinks like colas etc.

Steer clear of these foods and drinks that have nothing but empty calories and zero nutrition. Instead, stock your fridge with fresh fruits and vegetables and snack on healthy items such as Dr. Jens Nutrition Bars. These are packed with goodness and help to keep hunger pangs at bay too. It's a good idea to eat smaller, frequent meals multiple times a day. It will help keep you energized and will also ensure that your body gets the nutrients, proteins, and calories it needs.

3. Get Sufficient Sleep

It's crucial to get quality sleep for at least 8 hours each night. The best way to improve sleep quality is to get to bed every night at the same time.  Follow some calming practices before getting to bed, like meditation or introspection, as that will help you calm your nerves and help you sleep better at night.

4. Exercise regularly

When you follow a regular workout routine, it promotes good cardiovascular health and helps to build your immune system. Try to get a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate activity or about 75 minutes of more vigorous physical activity per week. Look online for some exercise routines that will keep you interested in working out at home.

Some Other Self-Care Activities

In addition to the things mentioned above, you can also:

  • Maintain communication with family, friends, and co-workers who may also be in self-isolation. FaceTime, Hangout, Skype, and other platforms enable you to be in touch without having to step out of your home.
  • Indulge in calming activities that you also enjoy. Start some DIY projects in your home with the things you can access easily.
  • Listen to music or cozy up with a great book.
  • You can start blogging or scrapbooking- these are excellent ways to express yourself.

As you can see, there are many little things you can do to care for yourself during isolation. The idea is to stay healthy and keep your mind and hands busy so that you are happier and less stressed in these trying times.
